Living on the Frontlines

Snow, snow go away….

Don’t get me wrong. I much prefer winter to summer in many ways. I do love the snow. I love the way it looks when it thinly coats the surface of everything making every branch look as though it’s been carefully staged for a Christmas card photo shoot.

I love the sound of nothingness when snow is on the ground – it just sounds different. And I even love that nippy feeling on my nose.

But enough is enough already!

I came home to find more snow than we had in Colorado. That wouldn’t be so bad, especially since the roads are well cleared and dry, except that the snowplows dump the extra white stuff on the sidewalks. We pedestrians don’t count for much. To make it worse, the piles are even higher at intersections. They block access to the buttons to push to change the light. You literally have to climb over the now hardening and dirty drifts and risk slipping into oncoming traffic to get past them.

The snow isn’t going anywhere any time soon. The forecast doesn’t have our temperatures going above freezing in the next week. All that means is the snow will become even more hard packed and dirty – thus taking even longer to melt off.

While the rest of the world travels around at perfect ease, I’m pretty much snowed in. I have to walk in the street to get anywhere dangerously close to traffic. Each ice patch presents the risk of slipping with moving traffic only inches away.

I feel like when I leave my house I’m taking my very life into my hands.

Although I got to escape at New Year’s, the cabin fever is already setting in and I feel as though I could climb the walls. Mind you, I’m coughing like no one’s business and probably shouldn’t leave the house anyway – but I’m going bonkers.

Tomorrow, I don’t know how, but I have to escape. It isn’t that I need anything – I just need to not be here.

Operation get to Homers is the plan for tomorrow.
