Re: low vision specialists in NY

    Caroll,

May people with albinism have an amount of astigmatsim in the same range as you do - requiring about 4 Dioptres of cylinder lens correction.

If, as you say, you are near sighted then, I guess, you can see vertical lines quite well at, say 10 ft away whereas you can see horizontals best at about 10 inches away. This is termed "with the rule" astigmatism. There is just a chance that you see it the other way around. - verticals at 10 inches and horizontals at 20 ft. This is termed "against the rule" astigmatism.

There are very few contact lenses on the market that can reliably correct that amount of defocus so I am not surprised that you rarely wear your contacts. On the other hand a good optometrist should be able to provide you with a pair of regular glasses that should correct the astigmatism quite well at any chosen distance.

My own eyes require a cyl correction of between 6 and 7 Dioptres so I am quite familiar with the practical difficulties of getting a good script properly dispensed. You mention that your astigmatism axis is 80 degrees. Your glasses lenses should have been aligned in the glasses frames to within a few degrees of that figure in order thant you can gain the full benefit of the cyl lens.

Another possible cause of your poor vision is the desire of many optometrists to under prescribe the cyl power. You may, for example, realy require maybe 5 or 6 dioptres of cyl correction but your eye Doc may have opted for two thirds of that figure. Under prescription is not an uncommon procedure - but is rarely appropriate for albino eyes.

If you would like to test your astigmatism and check your glasses correction for yourself then please send me an email. I will be glad to explain what you can do for yourself. You will need an inchtape measure and a Star Chart.

    Cheers,

    Brian

I do believe that we have a couple of people driving in NY with low vision who post over on the Bioptic Driving Network Webboards. You might want to ask about NY's process for driving with low vision/bioptics over there. Smile

    Hi,

I am 21 years old and I am considering trying to get a NY driver's license.   I am finding it  surprisingly difficult to find information about driving with bioptics in NY, all the available information has been vague and unhelpful.  For those of you who have been through this process, where did you find driving instructors?

    thanks,

    Jodi

     Carol:

I just obtained my permit and also just returned from my first lesson. I was scared and I'm not sure if I can do this! I worked with Dr. John Rundquist. See below for contact information.

My husband and his brothers (identical twins) all have ocular albinism and all have NYS driver's licenses with the use of bi-optics. They have seen Dr. Mark Greenberg since they were children. He is a low vision specialist and has great experience with visual training and bi-optics.

His address is 275 North Middletown Road, Suite 2B; Pearl River, NY 10965; Phone: (845) 735-5757

    Best of luck.

    Respectfully,

    Linda
