Driving in the UK with Bioptics- No law against it!

Unless legislation has changed in the UK recently, there is no legislation banning biopics.  I gained my license five years ago using an Ocutech device.  The examiner was curious, but I explained that they were simply "corrective Lens's" as stated in our legislation - no more, no less!  I passed my test, and drive legally provided I wear the biopics when driving.

I took legal advice before applying for my license.  This confirmed my understanding of our driving law and gave me confidence when meeting my examiner.

    Hello Dave.

I am very intested in what you said about now being able to drive in the UK after getting leagal advise.  I have ocular albanism and consider myself to have quit good vision.  What sort of questions did you ask and need to know before applying for your licence, I don't even know where to start.
Any advise and help you could give me would be great.  I would give my right arm to drive myself to work as i'm sure you understand.
Who tested your eyes and how much was the aid that you wear for driving?
    Thanks Natalie

Phone round a few solicitors and find one that is sympathetic to your situation.  Ask him/her about the relevant driving legislation regarding vision, and what constitutes 'corrective lens's' in the legislation legal jargon.  This is necessary as you may need their support if a test examiner isn't happy with you wearing so many 'corrective lens's'.

You will also need a sympathetic driving instructor.  Although they are unlikely to have any experience of working with someone wearing a bioptic, they will be able to asses if you are driving safely.  Most good driving instructors are on speaking terms with the local examiners and may be able to prepare the examiner for what he is about to see.

Contact Ocutech is the US.  They should be able to give you contact information of a sympathetic practitioner/Ocutech distributor in the UK.  The distributor I used is no longer in the low vision aids business.

My vision is corrected to 6/12 which is just outside the standard for passing the curbside eyesight test.  The Ocutech VES (4x magnification) device gave me the edge to pass the test.

I have used the word sympathetic several times,  as you will need help and advice from people you have not yet met, but you may also run into some very unsympathetic people - so be careful who you talk to.  One last point, a car is one ton of killing machine, you must be sure that you can drive safely.

    Good Luck

    Hi Dave.

Thanks for the information.  I'm so desperate to get my license as I can drive fine but just can't read the plate,  I can see it but can't make out the letters so never been allowed a license.

Sorry going to blast you with questions now, hope you don't mind.

Did you find the license was easy to obtain with the Biopitc once you got the legal advise?
Did you just phone up a few solicitors and how did you know which one was the right one?
Did you get the lenses before you started to learn to drive to get used to it?
Did the solicitor charge you for getting the information.

I can't believe iv'e found someone in the UK that has got their license with a Bioptic.

I'm so worried that i'll get the lenses and go to my first test / lesson and they will refuse me.

Really need to get hold of you to ask a question.

I have just been approved for a new bioptic and can read the plate of a car now.  My Vision is now corrected to 6/10 with the bitta scopes.

I can now apply for a provisional licence but need help with one question.  When it asked do I wear glasses to drive I aviously put yes,  do you have to state your eye condition or do you leave it blank?

    Hi Dave

Thansk for such an intersting post

I hae been driving for 60 years and due to an accident in 1962 lost an eye... No problem with one eye, I even flew aeroplanes.   but now after a mini trhrom in the remaining eye like another poseter here i can see the plate but cant read it...He can now..... so I would have no probs with the test again....

I wrote to Ocutech and am waiting for their reply about who to go to in the UK... though I live on the Isle of Man.

    best regards

    Drew.
