Re: I'm new and have a question.

Hi. I'm pretty new here too. I can't really answer your question from experience, but I can say that it's not impossible. I'd always been told that'd I'd never drive, but after getting on this web site I learned that there are many people with Albinism that are able to get a driver's license. I know that some states allow people with low vision to use a bioptic teliscope that clips onto your glasses. I'm 17 and I think that's the worst part about Albinism, when all your friends have their own cars and trucks and have had their driver's licenses since last year. I never thought it'd be that big of a deal, but now that I should have my license, it totally sucks. I do drive, but not on the highway. My mom is very good about pulling over at back roads where there's not that much traffic and letting me drive to the other end of the road. I think the best thing you can do is just practice, I don't think it's that much different for us than it is for a person with perfect vision, we have to learn the same things, we just have to take more precautions than they do. I wish you all the luck in the world that you can get to drive. I'm going to ask my eye doctor about it when I go for my next appointment in July. (I've been studying the driver's manual so that we can go straight to the DMV and take the permit test on the way home from the eye doctor lol. The funny thing is, my mom thinks I'm joking lol.) Anyway, I don't know if this has been helpful, but I know there are a lot of people on here that drive and I'm so thankful for them, because they gave me that hope that I never had. Welcome to NOAH.

Well, yes we can drive. I have driven since i was 17 and now im actually an off road racer  of all things. Learn your state laws and find yourself a good dr. I had a hard time getting my licens at first because  the people at the dmv just saw me and said no way buddy. with the help of a family frieend and a good d. i found my states loop holes and bam there you go. In my state (CA) there is a form you can take to your dr and have them do the vision test not the dmv and they fill out some areas and its the dr. that gives the ok on if you can drive or not then some buricrat at a desk just checks to see if its signed. Basicly dont take no for an answer if you feel comfortable driving there is always a way.

Re: I'm new and have a question.

from what i have learned it depends on the state. For instance I can drive in TN where I am from and in GA where I live now but i can not drive in NY it all varies based on state laws. I am in the process of gettin my license now at 17 and it takes a little longer than sited people because most of us use bioptics but its worth it. so i would definately check out your state laws

         God Bless

Re: I'm new and have a question.

I guess I could if I spent the money, but why?  Here is a few reasons I'm glad I don't drive.

    1. Sun (Yes, I "could" wear sunglasses but they would be really dark)

    2. Gas (Need I say more)

    3. Oil and other fluids and such

    4. Any other cost such as maintince

    5. Price of car

Now maybe some day I might change my mind (besides I would want a electric car) but for now I am happy with the bus and my bike.

Re: I'm new and have a question.

It all depends on where you live and what the laws are. I am 17 and live in TX, where it is allowed to drive with bioptics. I however, chose not to get my liscence, and for the most part, I'm totally fine without it. Sure, I never got my own car and I had to rely on friends and parents more than other people, but now that I'm in college, I have absolutely no problem with it. In my opinion, driving is way overrated anyway. Just another thing to wast money on-gas, car, insurance, etc. But if you insist on driving, check out your state's laws, i'm sure there is a large likelihood that you will be able to drive.

    Nick,

My daughter does want to drive.  She has an opthamalogist and optometrist.  In your experience who did you go through when getting your license?  I am finding the optometrist to be more practical about everyday things and the opthamalogist more on the medical side.

All of my doctors have been vary supportive for the most part. My optomitrist has known me since my first pair of glasses so we were fairly close and he was the one that actually signed the papers.

yes you are able to drive.. my parents never thought that i would be able to drive when i was born.. i have been driving since i was 15 & i'm 17 now.. it can be really difficult sometimes.. i'm not going to lie.. my advice is don't drive places that your not for sure of.. or where you are going.. because having bad vision doesn't really help matters from expirence..

but work hard & you will be successful.. just keep your hopes up!

Nope sorry - it is 100% impossible to drive with albinism. Guess you're just gonna have to live with it.

    Grinman,

I don't think you have your information correct!  You don't even know this person, or the extent of her condition to make a statement like you did.  Please find out facts so that what you have to say will be productive and helpful!
