Re: I've just had eye surgery and wow!

Hi to all, I hadn't realize how many questions peple had posed re the surgery. I've been away from the message boards for some time due to a bad fall a few months ago that resulted in a serious back and neck injury. Please know I wasn't ignoring anyone intentionally, it's kind of hard to type when your back and neck are in total spasm Stick out tongue.

Anyway, here's some answers that hopefully help. One person asked what the difference was between nystagmus and strabismus. Strabismus is most often referred to as lazy eyes, cross eyes, etc. It's where one or both eyes turn in or out due to unequal eye muscle alignment. It causes the brain to lose "stereo" vision and forces the brain to try to look at two images at once rather than one. Strabismus surgery realigns the muscles of the eyes so that both eyes look in the same direction.

Nystagmus surgery tries to work with the muscles to slow down the rate of shakiness of the eyes so that there is less movement, hence a better and more stable visual field. Both surgeries can be done in one operation, that is what I had done.

No, I cannot drive a car, it did not improve my vision that much. Yes, sometimes the surgery does have to be done more than once. This can happen if the muscles re-loosen or the alignment is off the first time.

I really liked Dr Kraft. He was very professional and treated me with the utmost respect and kindness.

I'm not sure about things right now. My visual acuity has not increased incredibly. My last eye test last week had me testing at 20/200 left eye and 20/400 right eye with poor field vision. Right after surgery my vision had seemed to improve some, but now it appears it may have settled back to a more pre-surgical level. I've been told the older you are when you have the surgery (I'm 35) the more difficullt it is for the brain to adjust to the new input signals from the eyes and way of seeing. I guess that's why they now recommend for people to have the surgery younger.

I go for my final post surgical check up in July...I'll have better info after that last set of tests.

Hope that helps some of you.

    Sorry about the delay again.

How old was your son at the time surgery?  Did it make a big difference for him?  Where is Dr. Hertle?

    Thanks for the info!

Not sure if this was directed at me or not but my son was 12 and the improvements were huge.   My daughter was 5 and the improvement was even more amazing and she didn't see to be in as much pain after.  Sheri

Yes, thank you.  Was it Dr. Hertle?  I am taking my son to see Gail Summers in Minnesota.  I hope we can gain some info on what his vision will be like in the future - very hard to tell at 6 months.

Re: I've just had eye surgery and wow!

Yes I took my children to Dr. Hertle.  I don't think that I would have allowed anyone else to do the surgery.  I have not heard good things from others who have not went to Dr. Hertle.

As for Dr. Summers, unless she has had a light bulb moment about this proceedure they last I heard she did not think that it was a good idea.  One family told me that she refused to see them if they had the surgery.  I don't know if that is fact but it is what the family told me.  Sheri

Re: I've just had eye surgery and wow!

Have you asked the doctor who did the surgery?  I would guess that it has to do with age.  Are you doing anything to help improve your vision such as any kind of vision therapy.  This does not have to be anything formal.  I worked with Zack and Brooke and both of their acuities improved.  Mush of vision is learned and the older you are the more difficult it will be for your brain to accept improved vision.  Sheri

Re: I've just had eye surgery and wow!

My boyfriend is albino, and I am not sure if he has heard of these procedures.  I want to approach him about it, but am unsure how to go about it.  I don't want him to think that I'm trying to change who he is, but I know his eyesight sometimes gets to him, as he is a very academic person, and reading textbooks tends to be a bit of an issue.  Any recomendations on how I can approach him about this, and any websites that he could look into for more information.

Sure go to the Aquired Nystagmus Network and join their group.  I followed for two years before telling my son about the proceedure.  Sheri

Re: I've just had eye surgery and wow!

Both of my children had entomb with Dr. Hurtle.  My oldest son was first.  He was 12.  I told him about the procedure and gave him the option.  He wanted to do it so I scheduled with Dr. Hertle and Zack was so pleased with the results that he insisted that his sister have the surgery immediately.  Brooke was only 4 and we were going to wait until she could tell us but Zack was instant.  He said that if younger is better than we needed to take her now.  Brooke had the surgery and immediately it was evident that their was improvement.  The day after surgery she watched the cars pass by while we drove down the road.  I cried as she saw her world for the first time from this venue.  Dr. Hertle's procedure was the best thing that I did for my children's vision.  Zack no longer has headaches daily, he can watch television from the couch and Brooke is running around like any of her sited peers and this was not the case before the surgery.  Sheri

    Sheri,

Thanks for sharing.  My son will be 11 weeks old tomorrow and I know that he can't have the surgery done until he is at least 9 mos old (I think) but we have an appt with Dr. Hertle on August 9th.  I am so glad it helped both of your children and I have almost competely decided that my son will have it if Dr. Hertle says he is a canditate for it.  We intend to use him as our PO as well.  Thanks again for sharing. Hearing the positive stories has definatley helped me to make my decision.
