Hi to all, I hadn't realize how many questions peple had posed re the surgery. I've been away from the message boards for some time due to a bad fall a few months ago that resulted in a serious back and neck injury. Please know I wasn't ignoring anyone intentionally, it's kind of hard to type when your back and neck are in total spasm
.
Anyway, here's some answers that hopefully help. One person asked what the difference was between nystagmus and strabismus. Strabismus is most often referred to as lazy eyes, cross eyes, etc. It's where one or both eyes turn in or out due to unequal eye muscle alignment. It causes the brain to lose "stereo" vision and forces the brain to try to look at two images at once rather than one. Strabismus surgery realigns the muscles of the eyes so that both eyes look in the same direction.
Nystagmus surgery tries to work with the muscles to slow down the rate of shakiness of the eyes so that there is less movement, hence a better and more stable visual field. Both surgeries can be done in one operation, that is what I had done.
No, I cannot drive a car, it did not improve my vision that much. Yes, sometimes the surgery does have to be done more than once. This can happen if the muscles re-loosen or the alignment is off the first time.
I really liked Dr Kraft. He was very professional and treated me with the utmost respect and kindness.
I'm not sure about things right now. My visual acuity has not increased incredibly. My last eye test last week had me testing at 20/200 left eye and 20/400 right eye with poor field vision. Right after surgery my vision had seemed to improve some, but now it appears it may have settled back to a more pre-surgical level. I've been told the older you are when you have the surgery (I'm 35) the more difficullt it is for the brain to adjust to the new input signals from the eyes and way of seeing. I guess that's why they now recommend for people to have the surgery younger.
I go for my final post surgical check up in July...I'll have better info after that last set of tests.
Hope that helps some of you.
Sorry about the delay again.
