    Re: 20/200 Driving

     Greetings:

To my knowledge you must have acuities of minimum 20/200 to be considered legally blind. I beleive there are many indivisuals with albinism who fall into this range, although you may have as good as 20/50. I have some albino friends who drive with no bioptics and simple wear contacts or need nothing at all. Anyway, I fall in that range and although the bioptics are not a permanant fix and are mostly only good for driving, based on personal preference. If you are after more facts about "bioptic" driving, I suggest you visit www.bpn.org

Different eye conditions have varying limitations. So, it is not enough to just have vision which is 20/200 to drive. Every indiividual is different and remember the biopics are not a quick fix!

    Re: 20/200 Driving

My eye sight is 20/200 and I drive wth the restriction of my driving glasses with bioptic.  I got my license when I was 29 and have had it for 10 years now.  The first year I had 45 mph limit and no night time driving.  After that year they did a driving test at night on the interstate which was scary rush hour trafic on the interstate in Norfolk, VA.  I have had a license in 4 states now the last being here in Denver, CO. My Dr. has my driving glasses tinted a small amount near the top to help with glare but not too much so it doesn't affect night driving.

    Hi Atin

I've had the tenetomy surgery done and no, it did not improve my vision enough to drive. My surgeon was very clear that the surgery would not improve my vision to that point. I currently see 20/200 left eye and 20/400 right eye.

    Re: 20/200 Driving

I was surfing on the net and found out that the minimal vision is 20/60 for day and 20/40 fon night driving. But, here I can see that some people can drive although they see 20/200. I want to know what means 20/200? Is it 10% because 20/200 is 0.1 and it's 10%, or I'm wrong??? I see 20% ( is it 20/100 ? ). Will I be able to drive with bioptics or I should give up. With my contact lences I can see 2nd row and sometimes barely the 3rd ( when I say the row I mean on numbers on the board on the wall where are written letters and numbers you have read ). My eye doctor told me I'm unable to drive but he doesn't know about bioptics. Now, I've heard about them and I'm going to go abroad to get them because I hope I'll see better with them. I'm sure I will, but I'm not sure I'll be able to drive a car.

    Re: 20/200 Driving

Laws for low vision driving are different for every state in the US and im sure each over seas country have there own different ones as well. I have had my license in CA now for 5 years with no restrictions at all. My current vission is around 20/70-80 cant remember. When i first got my license it was around 20/100 and i had contacts. I have since had PRK surgery and dont wear contacts or glasses any more. If anyone has questions on driving tests please feel free to ask me.

    Re: 20/200 Driving

The first bioptic I had was larger and heavy and I had to have metal frame glasses to hold the weigh.  I had that pair stolen at work years ago and then had to replace them.  The one I replaced it with and still use is very small and light weight.  I can use it on a regular small pair of glasses.  I am not sure what type of bioptic it is I believe the dr said it was 4x.  I have no idea about the % question.  Through the bioptic I see 20/40.  I don't do the eye test at DMV.  I get a paper from them for bioptic or medical problems and take it to my Dr. have him fill it out and they run a battery of tests to determine if you can drive or not.  2 people can have the same #'s but one can drive and one can't it will depend on how good your peripherial vision is also and some other things.  A low vision eye Dr can answer your questions I am sure if you let them know you are interested in getting a bioptic for driving.  I have been driving now for 11 years.  I started driving around the time bioptics came out.  Or where more accessible to get.  Before that I was told I could never drive.

    Re: 20/200 Driving

OK then, thank you for a reply.

Still, in my country there is no law for low vision driving. I don't know does it exist in European Union. But we're going to join the EU soon so I hope that law will exist in my country.

Anyway, bioptics will help me to see better and I want to buy them ( if I'll be able to drive that would be nice, but if I won't it doesnt matter, I have nothing to lose ). So, I decided to go to USA to low vision doctor to get the bioptics. I have to search on the internet where to go. Can you help me to decide? In my coutry, there is a good doctor only in the capital city, what about USA? Should I go to NY, LA, Chicago, Boston... or it doesnt matter ( I'll find the doctor who will give me bioptics I need ). Well, I have to prepare myself for that journey but me and my family would do almoust everything for my vision. So, can you give me e-mail of some low vision specialist to ask him?
