    Early Intervention/Social Security SSI

Well the lady from Early intervention came by today and asked a lot of questions. I signed alot of forms. The program is called babynet in SC. they will get a theaphist to come out once a week till she is 3 and give us some info on the school for the blind. and some more info. and take up some medical bills after the insurance doesn't pay any or something like that. I have to apply for that childrens' insurance, medicaid, and social security disability. Does anyone get SSI for their child? Or have you applied and didn't get? I am have an interview with them next week? Please let me know if anyone gets it and how I can get for my baby?

My son is on SSI. It was easy. I filled out paperwork, had an phone interview and then an interview at the SSI office. He is considered legally blind because of this age they do not know what their vision is. I filled out the paper  work, show paychecks. We barly made it, but he has it. Some months he does not because the income is too high. Good luck!!

We have never qualified for SSI.  I have called 2x over the past 4 years and my husband's income is too high.  Even though Zach is also legally blind and fits the medical description, the SSI is based on income on the parents.

When EI came to our house (when Zach was 4 months old to 1 year old), we paid $30.00/month for the 1 visit/month.  This was based on income and probably on the higher end of what people pay for EI.

    Good Luck,

    Jo

We also applied for SSI for both of my kids. Both of my kids are legally blind as well.  We did not qualify though because our income was too high.  Good Luck

I am afraid our income may be too high (for SSI) as well.   Our insurance helps cover his ECI visits.

How do they consider your son legally blind because of his age? I am wondering, my opt ped said my daughter was visually impaired (is that not the same thing?) and then I called the nurse and she said she is visually imparied not legally blind? should I go to another dr. ? I just think we should get the benefits if you need them. I worked all my adult life, I mean it's not like I haven't contributed to the taxes and what not. Do you both work full time? My husband worksk parttime and I have been laid off right before I had the baby and have been looking for work but nothting much here.

I guess EI depends on the state because yesterday, the EI lady told us that it doesn't matter how much you make you can get EI till they are 3 then they are turned over to the state. I don't know if the service is that great, but I will find out.

I think you might of misunderstood. Your child is entitled to EI, but depending on your income you might have a co-pay when the VI teacher comes....

Also, i am a stay at home mom (although I just got a night job) and my husband works. Each state's income is different for SSI. As for my son, because he has a white fondus and an infant can not see much as it is, that is why when Andrew was 5 months they said he was legally blind. He sees pretty good now, but I will not know what he sees until January (maybe)

If you have to pay for a vision teacher, that what is EI really doing? I don't know, I guess I will find out. thanks again Jill. I will see after my interview with SSI and let you know.
