Nike Contacts that Block the Sun??

    Hello,

Has anyone heard of Nike Maxsight Contacts??  I have heard that they act as sunglasses but are actually contacts?  They are avaliable in perscription or non perscription.  Also for those of you that have or have tried contacts in the past--how old were you and how was your expeirence?  My son is 9 years old and is convinced that he will be able to handle contacts!!!  I have contacts and have been trying to tell him that they are a lot of work and may not be the best idea this young---Oh yeah and he also wants to dye his hair???

Hi Emily! I was in 5th when I started wearing contacts and I liked them ok. They made my eyes dry alot though. I'm 13 now and I don't wear them, glasses are easier for me, maybe its something that he should try though. I think they also help with nystagmus too, so if he has that its a plus!

About dying his hair, I also tried that, I went with a darker blonde and I liked it but it faded out really easy and now you can tell I dyed it but it isn't how it was... I regret it now, maybe wait until he's a little older for his hair!

But contacts might be something he should try! Hope I helped!!

    Emily,

The Nike Maxsight Contacts are not meant to be woren all day long like a traditional pair of contacts are. They are only meant be woren during sporting activities. The website said they they also still recommend to wear a regular pair of sunglasses even though the contacts block about 95% of both UVA and UVB rays. However if I’m understanding correctly these contacts don’t block the blue light that’s what the website said. This is the website. www.bausch.com/en_US/ecp/visioncare/faq/nike_faq.aspx

Re: Nike Contacts that Block the Sun??

While these leses sound interesting, the link Jessica provided gives me enough information to see that they are not intended as an everyday lens, although they can be worn for a full day.  The FAQs on the link are very easy to understand.  They state that the tints are for glare reduction during outdoor activities, the two available tints are for diffeerent conditions--one sunny, the other cloudy and variable, and that they are not for everyday wear because of color distortion.  Also, they are a soft lens, they do not offer the lens with astigmatism prescriptio, and the range of prescription strength will exclude many of us, from a +4 to a -9 I think it says.  My gas permeable hard lenses are a something like a +7.5 and +8 if I remember right!

I have been wearing contacts for 25 years--rigid gas permeable.  I was 23 when I got them, would have had them much sooner but that was when my prescription strength was finally available.  I think the age when a person is ready to manage contacts is different for everyone, also the determination to want to make it work has a lot to do with it.  I know I could have handled them by age 10 or so.

One adbvantage that the rigid gas perms have is that sometimes they help slow nystagmus.

Yes, they are a lot of work, but for me they are much better than glasses.  Everyone is uniques in their needs and what helps the most--my brother will never, ever, ever try contacts!

RGP lenses are generally much less expensive than soft lenses, so it might be worth trying those first.

    Just my thoughts!

    Joni,

I am new to this sight and I have a 13 year old who has been hounding me for contacts. He also wants to play football next year which terrifies me because of the peripheral vision. The Nike contacts sound good for sports, but I really appreciated your information of the rigid gas perms since I was wondering how contacts would help/hurt his nystagmus.

    Thanks,

    Amanda

Hi I have a 14 year old son who just got contacts this past year. While they are not the nike version he loves them because he actually can see better with them. He uses Oakley sunglasses outside which he thinks are pretty cool. Another benefit for him was that he was teased a lot in school because of the nystagmus, with his corrective lenses it was magnified. Now it isn't as noticable. That has helped him socially. I worried that he wouldn't be able to put them in himself but that wasn't an issue. He learned quickly. If you do get those Nike lenses let us know how they work.

    Wendy,

My son is 13 and has OCA.  He has worn contacts successfully for several years and they really helped with the nystagmus.  He mentioned lst night wanting to meet another child that has his condition.  He has white/blonde hair, blue eyes, and a very fair complexion.  He is a straight A student and very outgoing.  School has gotten a little tougher socially, which is why he is wanting to connect with someone his age with a similar condition.  Does your son have OCA?  Would you/he be willing to contact me outside of this chat for our kids to connect?

    thanks,

Re: Nike Contacts that Block the Sun??

about time i found another perfect spot for me to provide some info. Im 23 now and wore contacts since 3rd grade way back in the early 90's Tech has come a long ways since then. Back in the begining all my contacts were custom fit at the bosch factory in SF oh the memorrues lol. I tried all different types and colors and usually went with a light ble hard linse. I actually did testing on an early predisesor of the nikies way back when which were actually normal contacs just way tinted, nearly black. They were very dark blue and worked great outside really cut down on the brightness and they did help with the eye shake. Down side was inside everything was way to dark to be practical. In high school i played football my first 2 years until breaking my ankle (nothing to do with vision )  And swam varsity for 4 years. The jet black contacts go used furing games and practice after school and drove the other teams crazy when they looked in my eyes (coach loved it) For swimming i rarely wore contacts since googles come off way to often. I had no problems learning to wear contacts at a very eearly age and loved them. I got to the point where i could put them in or take them out in pitch black... As for sports for any of your children i really incurage it 100% let the coaches no and they can help alot. For football i played fullback and linebackers and had no problems with my vision. My coach knew never to put me in on a pass play  and i usually ran pitches or hand offs which i could see no problem. Deffince was no prob either since my possition usually rushed or dropped back for pass protection in which case you find your guy and put yourself between him and his qb not to hard at all. Never really cared to play ball sports probably since i couldn't see the ball that well.  I did play basket ball all throught primary school on breaks without much problems. Also look into laser eye sergury when they get older i had it and loved it. Don't let dr.'s say it wont work, i searched and found the best on the west coast and it worked. Not perfect vision but better then contacts. If any of you have questions please feel free to contact me.

    Hi Bill

I don’t know the correct term for what exactly my son has but I know that they told me ocular albinism and that I am the carrier. My Grandfather and my male cousin also have the same condition. As for my son, I will have to talk to him when he returns. He is on a camping trip this week with his Boy Scout troop. I just started blogging today. My son has blue eyes, blond hair although it is not white blonde, he is fair skinned but also not that fair. I can tell you that middle school has been really tough for my son. But he is going into high school this year and some people tell me it gets better. Bullies are the real issue, but sometimes it is just that people ignore him and that hurts too.

    Wendy,

Thank you for the reply.  Let me know if you son would mind corresponding with my son.  My son also has blonde hair, blue eyes, and has a very fair complexion.  I believe his skin coloring causes him more anguish as he sees it as an obvious sign that something is different.  God has blessed with him a strong-willed attitude and he handles most issues okay.  But, as you know, it is important for teens to feel included so we try to keep him involved with a small network of close friends.  However, I know it would really help him to connect with another teenager that can really understand the pressures of his situation.

I look forward to hearing from you.
