wow...I feel so blind compaired to you guys. If i didn't wear my glasses I wouldn't be able to do anything...just walk into walls and grope my hands on tables looking for things. I'm like...slightly jealous with how good your vision is...your as in plural. It's interesting how diverse people with albinism's vision really an be.

Don't worry Meghan, I would be so lost without my glasses. They make a huge difference to me too, expecially the ones for close up work.

My daughter (8) has just started to notice that her glasses help her.  When she was younger she said that it didn't help her at all.  It is with things like reading that she does notice.  When she was little I didn't make her wear them unless she was going to school.  To be honest I only did it so her teachers wouldn't think I was a bad parent.

hi there, well when I was little and they told me that I had to wear my glasses it made me cringe.  They were so heavy, ugly, and bulky that I would hide them under a rug, in the dryer, or anywhere that they would get broke. lol, but serious!

Now that I'm older and the glasses can be made extemely more thin, I do wear them most times.  They do help with the clarity a little, but I don't need them all the time. They most help with TV and the computer.

And I was never told what type of albino I am, but I am as white and legally blind as they come.

    Hello

Bethany got her glasses about a month ago. I notice since she started to wear them she gets around alot better. Bethany leaves them on her face and doesn't pull them off which is good. I can't believe how much a little pair of glasses can ran you! But I can't ask her if they help or not she doesn't talk awhole alot either she will be 10months on the 30th.

I have oculotaneous albinism and I'm lost without my glasses. I've been wearing glasses since I was 14 months old (still have my first pair, they are tiny!) and my face feels strange without them. I think I'm lucky in that wearing glasses is quite a cool thing to do these days and I splashed out on a pair of versace frames which make me feel good.

I think I can see quite well without my glasses (the doctors say otherwise) but wearing them makes the world sharper, clearer and bigger and I get less bruises from walking into things.

    Hi,

My name is Michael and I am 31 years old.  I believe the form of albinism that I have is OCA2.  I have been wearing glasses since I was 3.  In my case, the glasses do make a difference in my vision.  Without them, distant objects are rather blurry.  My glasses also have the photogray feature, which means they darken when exposed to sunlight.

My glasses do improve my vision a great deal.

    Hope this helps.

Re: Question for all adults/teens with albinism (glasses)

I started wearing glasses when I was three and migrated to contacts at age eleven. I have OCA and an acuity of 20/200. I have never doubted that my glasses / contacts improve my vision, but I also don't doubt that they don't work quite as well for some as others. I would definitely constult with his eye doctor to determine if the glasses are truly not helping or if the prescription just needs ajusting. He may also be experiencing some sort of self conciousness about wearing them. I know four sounds young, but now and days it is a possibility. Depending on how much he is doing right now, he may feel he needs them, but once he gets in school and begins learning to read and write, he may change his mind. The possibilities are endless, and I hope this is of some help. Let me know what happens and feel free to contact me if you wish to discuss this or anything else further...

    God bless,

    ~~Lauren~~

Re: Question for all adults/teens with albinism (glasses)

I just reread my first post on this topic, and feel I did a poor job of making my point.

Yes, my glasses help me.  Not in the way a normally pigmented persons glasses help them--by getting lots of additional lines on an eye chart.  I can function around the house without them, and on a lazy day I sometimes do.  But I wear my contacts upwards of eighteen hours many days--I don't sleep much!

For a person with a 'normal' eye problem, just nearsighted for example, a pair of galsses can generally correct their vision to 20/20.  A person with albinism's refrative error can only be corrected up to what the eye is 'wired' for. I can't think of a better way to phrase that.  This is why so many people get the comment about "Where are your glasses? or You need glasses!".

My oldest daughter, without albinism, is extremely nearsighted and has a lot of astigmatism.  Her uncorrected vision is 20/200.  She can't read a word without her glasses.  With them, she is 20/20.  My corrected vision is 20/200 in my better eye, somewhat worse without.  I can actually read a word or two if I put the book in the right place and turn it just so and close one eye, scrunch up my face and put a finger next to my eye--this without correction, of course.

I thikn that everyone needs to realize that what glasses general accomplish for most persons with albinism is not what they do for someone with a standard refractive error, hence some often feel they are of little or no help.

Does any of that make sense!

    Joni

I am not sure what type of albinism I have, but I do wear glasses. They help me but I still have trouble seeing and squint or hold things closer sometimes.
