 Hello there,

I am researching Albinism and I'm curious to learn about the current largest albino family in the world. I have found the Guiness World Record entries about the Sesler and the Gaulin kids. But surely there's other numerous albino siblings around right?! Ive read around the forum and there's a bunch of people claiming to have two or three albino siblings like themselves. Any out there reading this? 

 If anybody would like to help me and give me some information, I would greatly appreciate it :)

I find this very insulting for some reason.

Africa has 1 and 3000 people having albinism, here in the states it is 1 and 17,000. I guess start your research there.

I kind of took offense to it too and thought it was insulting, but I thought it was just me b/c I am still in shock over everything....  But now I see that it's not just me.

I am terribly sorry. I did not mean to insult anybody. I spoke genuinely and maybe naively. I am a student doing a paper on hereditary genetics, and I was interested in it because I am fascinated in how we as siblings, parents, families.. look alike. And the reason why I asked about the 'record' is because I read about it in the Guiness Book and thought that could be great way to maybe kick off research.... by finding a big family were most of the siblings had the same hereditary aspect, whatever that aspect was. 

I assume the wording of my post was just not appropiate. For that, I do apologise.

In any case, thank you very much and I am sorry for the inconvenience. I thought I could have get some guidance in this forum, but once again, I'm sorry for not knowing that this was inappropiate.

Good to know I'm not the only one that found it a little insulting.   

It's not like it's a competition...Oh Gee...I think I want to try to have more kids with albinism so I can have more than anybody else and beat the world record.

Yes Laura, I think it was definitely the wording of your question.

Maybe we could still help.   What specific questions are you hoping to get answered by knowing who the largest family is?   Albinism is a recessive gene, so for 2 parents who each carry one of those genes, there is a 1 in 4 chance that they would have a child with albinism.  But statistics are just statistics.   Those same 2 parents could have 4 children and all 4 of them could have albinism or all 4 of them might not have albinism.  It's just chance really.  So yes, it's not uncommon for people with albinism to have siblings with albinism if they're from the same two parents.

It wasn't at all a question about who thought 'OH GEE, let's have more kids with albinism to break a record'. I was wondering if there was indeed a particular case where there was a big family where most siblings were children with albinism. That was all. I never thought anybody would take insult from posing such question. Once again, I was wrong.

I appreciate you taking your time to give me information. I won't be asking anything else.

And, I do truly understand that as an outsider to this community who randomly asked a question like that I caused an unnecesary stir. But I came here with the best of intentions and hopes of finding information. I do think that, yes, one must express it if one feels uncomfortable with the way something is being said, but at the same time, a lot of hostility came against something that wasn't even ill intentioned in the first place.

I don't think it was much of what you asked, but how it was asked like others said. You've already read that albinism is a recessive gene, and the genetic prospects of its re-occurence. Why is it, the question, to you, does it matter whom has the largest family of albinism? It's ok, you didn't know how to approach the subject without knowledge.

I will tell you most parents of children with albinism were where you at one point, had no idea of the condition, no idea of recessive genes, no idea of the visual impairments...just shocked. 

Just a little info, one in seventy persons carry one gene that produces little or no pigment (hence albinism)- the rarity exists when a person has a child with a partner(with the same) - which is about one in 17,000.

I know your intentions were not at all ill-willed- just curious. I as a mommy, so you know, would never want my child to be called an albino. Things have certainly changed. People are not conditions.

Anywyas, we have 3 kids and two of them have albinism! I am curious if our fourth will have albinism or not!

I am a graduate student and am in the begining stages of my masters research project so I understand how frustrating research can be and how often times you find something interesting and want to learn about it and there's just not much information on it published.  Wow, that was a long sentence, but I hope it makes sense. 

I appreciate your curiosity and patience in seeking the answer you are interested in.  I have three sisters and my little sister has albinism and so do I.  So in our family there are two out of four girls with albinism.  Obviously, we are not the family with the most people with albinism in it, but it's great to have a someone who always has a spare pair of sunglasses and saves you a seat in the front row =)  I was 8 when my little sister was born and had spent the first eight years of my life trying to follow my two older sisters (w/o albinism) and so I think I appreicat my little sister more than I may have otherwise. 

What exactly are you studying in relation to albinism?  Good luck with your project and if you need anything else, I can try to help you out.

By the way I have 2 children & 2 cousins with albinism

The Gaulin family are children of a person with albinism, increasng the ratio of albinism to 1:2 instead of 1:4 with each pregnancy if I remember rightly (sure someone will correct if I am wrong). Dad always passes on an albinism gene and mum has 1 in 2 chance of passing on affected gene

Una, you are correct.  The chance does increase to 1:2 instead of 1:4 when one of the parents has albinism.

       My name is Hollie and my nine month old daughter Brylie has albinism.  I too am in college and the research out there just amazes me.  I was wondering if you found any good info you would like to share.  I know as a mother who has a child with albinism I like to know all the facts there are. My little brother reads all the record book and there are truly some amazing facts.  I did not take offense to your post and I am happy that you asked the people who know the most about it.  I want to try and educate Brylie the best way I know how, and that includes educating the rest of world about albinism and the facts.  Good Luck with all your research and let me know if I can be of any assistance.  Brylie's doctors have given me tons of facts and info and I would love to share them with people who are trying to learn more.  *********Hollie***********
