    Does anyone live in California?

My husband got offered a position in Irvine,California and I was wondering about the schools and what kind of services are available for the visually impaired. We live in Michigan and get all kinds of help from the school district. We have a teacher consultant for the visually impaired who works with us. She has things enlarged for my son and provides technical equipment like a clarity, laptop with zoomtext & kurzweil. Do you get this kind of help in California as well? Thanks for any questions you can answer in advance.

I grew up and currently live in the South Orange County area which is where Irvine is located. All of the school districts in the area had great services for disabled students when I was in school. I graduated about 20 years ago so I don’t know if the situation has changed but I suspect it has not. Any school that did not have a dedicated program on campus had at least an itinerary teacher that would assist students.

When I was in elementary school, we even had a ham radio club for visually impaired students.

We moved from Royal Oak to Fresno about three years ago.  Let me know if there is any help I can offer.  I have a 5 year old dd with albinism and a 2 year old ds without.

Have your kids started school yet? If so what do you think about the Califonia school system? Does it compare to Michigan? We are in Oakland County so the services are pretty good here. We still don't know if we are moving are not but I want to get as much info as I can so that I can make the right decision. As most people know Michigan is in last place when it comes to employement so I was also wondering how California is doing? The housing is also a concern because from what I saw online you need $500,000.00 for any home in the orange county area or anything close to Irvine, Califonia. What are the water bills, electrical bills like. We only get the news saying that Califonia has a shortage of water and power so I can imagine them being expensive. Sorry to ask so many questions but I want the truth, which I don't feel the company pursuing us will be honest. They just want to get you for as inexpensive as possible. Thanks for any help you can give.

Re: Does anyone live in California?

Hey Wendy!  Sorry I didn't reply earlier, I don't get here as often as I used to!

My daughter will start kindergarden this fall.  I think the schools are hit or miss, some good some bad.  I'm excited about the school that N will be attending even though the district doesn't do real well on the state test scores.  We chose our house based on the elementary school and are happy with our choice so far.  When we left RO we had EI services.  A vision person would come out monthly I think (Sharon and then Julie) and we were in a playgroup at the local school 2 or 3 times per week.  She was 2 when we left RO.  When we moved to Fresno we got nearly identical services although we loved our vision person so much.  When she transitioned out of EI she was placed in a fantastic preschool at Fresno State with visits from the vision person every 2 weeks.  We were very happy with the preschool program there.  I was very happy with the IEP experience, everyone seemed very focused on Natalie.  Although to be honest her vision limitations seem to be minimal at this point so its probably pretty easy to be excited about an IEP for a VI kid who tests at 20/40.  However, there was no functionial vision test done and no talk of the expanded core curriclium...all things I learned of in Vegas.

How old are your kids?  Where are you at in Oakland County?  I wonder if we may have met already...there was a NOAH picnic back in 2004(ish), were you there by chance?  We are currently visiting family in Lenewee county but will be back in Oakland county the 28th through the 3rd.  I've been trying to get together with some of our old NOAH friends but don't have a firm date yet.  Most of the kids there will be under 8.  Let me know if you're interested in getting together then.  You can send me an e-mail by clicking on my profile.

I'd be happy to discuss CA life in general although I can't think of two more removed places than Fresno and Orange County...really its like night and day, but still I'd be happy to let you know my experiences.

    Hoping to hear from you,
    Kelly

I live in Orange County.  Typically, our schools have good services for the VI.  Irvine will be good because it is an affluent community, so the schools, I've heard, are really good.

I recommend for low vision specialist the Southern California College of Optometry, which has a low vision clinic.  I've been a patient there for 20 years and have been quite happy with them.
