    Re: contacts or glasses???

My son has abinism and got his first contacts at 13yrs old. He actually got more vision using the contacts and absolutely loves them! As for when to get them I don't know about 7 yrs old because they need to be able to put them in and take them out on their own. I know that our eye doctor was telling my son everytime we saw her that when he was ready to do it on his own she couldn't wait to give him contacts. Talk to your eye doctors.

    Good Luck

    Re: contacts or glasses???

My 8 yr old daughter has albinism.  She has glasses and has never asked about contacts.  My older daughter (without albinism) got contacts at 12 yrs old because it was hard to play basketball with her glasses.  At 12 yrs old she did great with them.  I think it depends on the child.  I do think that kids could be ready at a younger age if they are responsible.  Good Luck.

    Re: contacts or glasses???

My son was 14 and got better vision with contacts. My daughter was 6 when we first started trialling them but so far she has been unsuccessful but I don't push her, she will try every few months or so. We wanted them to help her photophobia and she was asking for them as she saw her brother with them. Our doctor who works between Moorfields & Great Ormond Street Hospital (both very famous hospitals in the UK, with patients from all over the world)  is happy to allow them once the child can take them out by themself in case they needed to be taken out when a parent is not around. I asked at an early age as I knew babies with other eye conditions at Katies VI toddler group wore contacts. Katie will still have to wear glasses over the top.

She also had the same issues wth judo but has since given that up because she desn't like being without glasses.

    Re: contacts or glasses???

HELLO--MY FOUR YEAR OLD DAUGHTER KENNEDY HAS ALBINISM AND JUST RETURNED FROM HER YEARLY EYE EXAM WITH DR. HERTLE.  SHE HAD THE EYE MUSCLE SURGERY, SO THIS WAS A FIRST POST OP EVALUATION TOO.  HER APPT. WENT VERY GOOD AND DR. HERTLE HAD MENTIONED THAT HE LIKES TO TRY CHILDREN OUT WITH CONTACTS STARTING AT AROUND AGE TEN.  HE STATED THAT YOU DO GET BETTER VISION WITH THE CONTACTS VERSUS GLASSES.  IT ALSO DEPENDS ON THE CHILD, WHETHER OR NOT THEY FEEL COMFORTABLE PUTTING THE CONTACTS IN AND OUT BUT FROM AN EYE DOCTORS PERSPECTIVE, HE THINKS AROUND AGE TEN....

    Re: contacts or glasses???

I was 12 when I first got my contacts, and it did improved my vision. I've worn different types from tinted to regular clear to clear with glasses over them and now I am wearing the istigmatism ones.

I had a bad reaction with my eyes and the tined ones. They were too think and very uncomfortable. My eyes were always watery and my eye lids got bumpy underneath them...ew

The istigmatism ones are amazing. I went down two more lines on the eye chart. With contacts i was also given proifrial (sp) vision, which helped a lot in making my vision better.

10-1 years old are the best times to get contacts, I believe. Talk to your doctor about them, I started talking to mine when i was 9 and we went through it a few uears later

     good luck!
