five-year-old albino girl in Tanzania by hacking off her legs with a machete and
then drinking her blood, media reported on Wednesday.

The High Court in
the northern town of Mwanza on Tuesday convicted 50-year-old Kazimiri Mashauri
after hearing he disappeared with the severed limbs and left her to
die.

The girl's killing was one of a spate of attacks on the country's
estimated 200,000 albinos in the past years, mostly in the remote northwest of
the country near Lake Victoria, where superstition runs deep.

Albino
hunters kill their victims and harvest their blood and body parts such as hair,
genitals and limbs for potions.

Their body parts are prized in some
regions of Tanzania, where witchdoctors say albinos -- who lack pigment in their
skin, eyes and hair -- bring luck in love, life and business.

Al Shaymaa
Kwegyir, Tanzania's first albino member of parliament, welcomed the conviction
and praised the government's crackdown on the inhumane killings.

"The
court ruling should serve as a lesson for others," Kwegyir told Reuters by phone
from Tanga region where she is campaigning for a parliamentary seat.

Conference opening and closing videos

The videos at the opening and closing sessions and slideshow from the conference were so entertaining and well done. Any chance they can be posted to the NOAH website or to Youtube? I'd love to share them with our family who wasn't there.

Disability

My daughter was recently diagnosed with Albinism and is legally blind. But both of them have developed yellowing on the exposed or older parts of their hair. My husband keeps his hair long, and it ranges from white hair at the top near the roots down to a deep yellow color at the ends. My son's hair is shorter, and yellows all over.

When my husband lived in a rural area, he says his hair remained white, but we live in a big city, so we think it's the air pollutants that are doing it, or possibly the water. Does anyone else have this problem, and if so, has anyone found a hair treatment or shampoo that can reverse the effects of environmental pollutants or strip them off and restore the hair to its natural white?

Photographic Portrait Series

Hello,

I am a Toronto based photographer, and I am planing to
begin a
series of portraits of people with albinism. Having recently heard
about Paul Ash and his work with Under The Same Sun, I have become very
interested in Albinism and how skin pigmentation relates to peoples'
sense of identity and culture. Albinism occurs in
people of all ethnic backgrounds, and my hope is to produce a series of
portraits for exhibition showing people of various races with
Albinism. Clearly culture and heritage comes down to much more then the
amount of pigment in our skin and hair, and yet people often define
themselves as black, white, brown etc. The way we carry ourselves,
mannerisms, dress etc. are all as big a part of what makes us belong to
certain culture as skin color is, and that is the purpose of this
series, to make portraits that demonstrate that. If anyone on this
forum would be, or knows of anyone who may be interested in
participating
in this project please let me know. Also, any advice is appreciated.

2010 DC NOAH CONFERENCE WAS AWESOME!!

I attended the conference this past weekend and being a first-timer as a parent I didn't know what to expect. But OMG I must say I really enjoyed myself!! I have never felt soo much love before in my life!! The Albinism Community are the most loving people I have ever met. Most were soo friendly and extremely welcoming. Just seeing the many different races of Albinism was soo cool!! Even though I couldn't get my 17 yr old son to attend (he really doesn't realize and understand how much he missed!!)

Vitiligo is a relatively
common, acquired loss of pigmentation of the skin, affecting 1% to 2% of the population.
Destruction of melanocytes, or pigment cells, occurs and the skin becomes
white. The most common sites of pigment loss are body folds (like the
groin or armpits), around body openings, and exposed areas like the face or
hands. It can also develop at sites of injury: cuts, scrapes, and burns. http://www.supercareproducts.com

A great trick! If you happen to send your $300 cell phone through a permanent press cycle. Stuff it in a bag of rice for three days. That might save it!

Recently this happened to me and I learned a couple of lessons. The first is that finding a cell phone that a person with severe vision problems can see is difficult. The second is that choosing to not have a cell phone is even more difficult. I have a touch-phone which I find has larger buttons on average, but that made it expensive to replace. I learned a valuable lesson.

I obviously digress from the title of this topic. I've recently started texting (very slowly for obvious reasons) and I'm thinking about expanding my plan. I've avoided it because I can't really text that well without a powerful magnifying glass. I want to know if those of you with poor vision text and if so how often and what plans you might recommend.

In-the-lens telescope

Can anybody tell me if Dr. Peli's In-the-lens telescope has reached the market?

Research

Please use this link and complete the survey. We have entered our daughter who has OCA1a. I would like to ask if we Could have your support in helping her win cause i think it would be great if a child with albinism won. At first i thought i would have been afraid to post her picture anywhere else let alone have a chance to be aired on the news. It was not till last sunday a comment from a complete stanger gave me the courage to enter her. I always thought people would look at her and be spooked by her apperance so to say as it has happened a few times. but lately the more we have taken her out as she has gotten older it has been the complete opposite. there are still the ignorant people but the more people i have ran into that were positive the more it helps to not let her albinism get us down.

If you are a local in the cleveland area with a child between 3 months and 18 months why not give it a go? The deadline for entrants is tomorrow evening and voting will start on the second of july. Any one can vote as well just have to sign up at the web site. I am really excited for this 8,000 people so far . best to the luck of the draw. Even if you dont vote please say a prayer.

Here is her link to vote for her:

         http://fox8.upickem.net/engine/Details.aspx?p=A&c=17982&s=4274814&i=1&r=305591

And the homepage link to register to voteor to enter a child.:

               http://fox8.upickem.net/engine/Welcome.aspx?contestid=17982

Trouble logging into Noah

I do no understand why my computer will not log me into my Noah acct.
Thanks!
