    2 Years and going

I have now been driving for two years, and doing great. Everyone told me I would not be able to drive and at 24 I proved them wrong.

I am now 26, and I have driven everywhere! Need advise, encouragement, or just someone to believe in you, just give me a shout Smile

Congradulations. I was told the same thing when I was younger and now I have been driving for about 12 years and even got my motorcycle license. Good luck and keep it safe.

UmbrellaNeed encouragement I'm 36 years old and have to go through the process of trying to get the bioptic ion Ohio again 2 or 3 years ago I tried and was told I was too imature to qualify for the program. Was wondering if anyone was told that. I really don't want to go through the ups and downs again from one first doing the test at OSU and being told ya I am right for the program. Then to go to the place that does the training and get told no that's the downs. Oh and did I mention I'm forced retired. The reason why is I'm on Social Security and if I work they take from the check and I help my family with almost everything now.

    Cheers

cademujohn....have you tried going to your local United Disability Services office?  I live near Akron Ohio and I went through them and got all of my training covered and I paid a portion of my bioptics and they paid the rest.

Hi,  I am in the process of obtaining a learners permit.  I purchaed a ves bioptic system about two months ago.  Any tips on how best to use it while driving.  I practice on my bicycle and while driving with my wife.  I tend to focus too much on the signs.  I have normal 20 200 vision  i live in springfield virginia.  Any guidance that you could provide would be helpful. Thanks

Sorry I don't have any advise for you on this matter.. But I do have a question.. You said that you was trying to get your learners permit.. What type of albinism do you have? My son is 5 years old and he has OCA1. We was told that he would never drive. However he is always talking about driving and how good a driver he will be and he can't wait to get old like his dad and I so he can drive. He just told me the other day that he had a dream that he was driving his older brother (doesn't have albinism) around. That just breaks my heart when ever he talks about it.

I have no idea which type I am my eyesight is 2200 I use a bioptic telescope mounted to my glasses to drive.  I was told for years I couldn't drive by my parents.  I got my liscence when I was 29.  I have the light skin and legally blind.

    Re: 2 Years and going

My son's vision is 2200 also. They have told us that glasses would not help him. But that does excite me to know that there is something out there that could help him when he is older to be able to drive and not have to depend on someone else. One of my biggest fears is that he would move away to a big city where they have public transportation. Thanks for your response.  I do have one more question. We have only been dealing with this for 5 years. And summer time or anytime we go outside is just so stressful for me just b/c I scared he is going to get sunburned. Maybe even more so now cause Dylan is in school and I can't monitor how much and how well the nurse applies his sunscreen. I have stressed to the school system along with the nurse how important it is for this to be applied the correct way. My question is what happens if he gets burned? I know that I have always been told that he just burns faster and worst than I would. That in it self is bad, but is that the worse of it?

    Thanks for talking to me..

    Re: 2 Years and going

I have been burnt so many times when I was young and as a teen that I lost count.  When I get a bad burn I turn as red as a lobster and blisters come up.  It does however make me physically ill ie. chills fever, and nausia.  I learned to feel over time when the sun started feeling hot to me and knew I needed more sunscreen on.  I haven't been burnt in a long time now.  I apply sunscreen when out about every 30 minutes or so.  depending on what activity and wether or not in the water.  I do however have precancerious spots due to being burnt so many times and have had to have them burnt off several times some still come back.  You have to be careful since we are more suceptible to getting skin cancer.  When he is older you can find a Dr that may be able to fit him with a bioptic telescope to drive.  They do a battery of tests to see if you qualify to drive and it is done every 2-4 years depending on the state.  I now live in Denver, CO and love it here and yes I do use public transpertation at times.  If nothing else but to save gas right now.  But out of the large cities and small cities I have lived in I have had the least problems and not as scared here I guess since most of the other people here drive reasonably.  While I was in school my mom just sent notes to keep me out of the outside activities since they didn't monitor me well and she didn't want me burnt.
