Adults With Albinism Events
As an adult with albinism, what types of NOAH events would appeal to you? Here are some ideas to get the ball rolling: - Social events in your own geographical region. - Educational events in your own region: social issues, vision issues, driving issues, etc. - City Adventures - a group of adults with albinsim meeting in a fun city to explore the history, culture, restaurants etc. - A combination of a city adventure with some educational emphasis mixed in. - Would you like to be able to bring your children or would you prefer an event geared toward adults? In your answer, please list your approximate age, as well as your area of the country! Thank you! Rita With Love and Bright Blessings

Re: Adults With Albinism Events
Hi Rita,
You've got some great ideas! I would love to do some city adbventure type things as I am a major history and genealogy enthusiast--don't get me stared! A little education thrown in wouldn't hurt! Are you thinking in terms of a tour type situation?
I'm 47, proud of it, and please, leave the kids at home for this one!! (OK, so it's been a long weekend with the kids, and throw the grandson in for some added fun!)
I live in Cudahy, Wisconsin, a suburb of Milwaukee stuck between the airport and Lake Michigan!

Hey Rita,
I found my password..=^.^=
I'm in my 20's (22 this year) So something educational would be great. I'm from Detroit, Michigan and there are some nice places to explore. Like the Detroit Institute of Arts, there are exibits in the Detroit Public Library, and downtown is a great place to get lost and walk around. I would also like to participate in a nice socail... something casual with relaxed convo and music, maybe poetry but mostly where you dress nice (casual) and meet people.
..."i am a monster" she looked into the mirror, at the broken image that reflected, "a child of darkness"
she backed away slowly and fell the her knees... "help me"

Re: Adults With Albinism Events
Hey Rita , Everyone Personally social events in my own area are or should I say would be the ideal for the obvious reason that out of town travel is not something u do on impulse...now that being said it doesnt mean that I will not participate if I find the time for an out of town event...that is if work allows me to live at short notice... Being that I am in my late twenties and dont drive yet....have the learners permit but scared ****less to get behind the wheel...I would also like to get to an educational insight into how others do or intend to do

Re: Adults With Albinism Events
Hello Rita, I am most interested in a social club. It will definatly help to be among those who are teachers with albinism. I am studying to be a teacher for children with autism. At the moment I am an asistant teacher at a private elementary school in Houston, TX. My age is 25 going on 26 in July. Your ideas are fabulous. Another suggestion is creating an organization for albinsms living within the Houston area. It would really be beneficial for me. Thanks!
Shade
PS. We really need to meet. I have not gotton the oppertunity to meet with you face to face. I live in Missouri City, TX.

Re: Adults With Albinism Events
Rita are you looking for ideas for the next adult day? My sister Betty and I are very interested in socializing with other adults with/without albinism. We are both in our mid 30's and live in New York; Long Island to be more exact. Some of our suggestions are: go sight seeing maybe a take a dinner cruise go to a show meet somewhere and have a game night. Everyone brings there favorite board game or card game. We hope this helps Carol and Betty Carley

Re: Adults With Albinism Events
Hey Rita. Thanks for the e-mail, haven't been here for a while. I am pretty busy now that I have moved to Maryland and am employed(Hallalujah, Praise Jehovah!!!) I personally just want to go on a vacation with friends. So a visit to a historical city or skiing at a low-vision friendly resort with good proximity to dancing is good for me! And I turn 37 this year. And no offense to those with children but adult outing means all participants are of leagal age to vote. Later.

Re: Adults With Albinism Events
Well personally, I would like to meet in various cities around the country to explore the history, culture, restaurants, and things to do. I really like to travel and I feel this would also give me a chance to meet others with albinism in other parts of the country.

Re: Adults With Albinism Events
Hi I'm Luke 24, living in KC. I think any social event which allows us to come together and get to know each other better is a great idea. I don't see any reason why we can't plan more social events locally.
I relly enjoy getting together for NOAH conferences and other social events, but they dont really occur often enough in my opinion and they usually require me to travel out of town, which can be difficult to schedule sometimes.
I think both local and regional events would be a great idea. Bcause regional and national events are difficult and costly to coordinate, it makes more sense to hold them annually once a year, while local events can be planned on multiple occasions.
I am all for helping to coordinate a local event in the midwest. I have a drivers license and would be more than happy to drive anyone else interested in meeting together locally.
I also thinks its very important not to segregate these trips from those under 18. As a kid growing up with albinism its difficult enough fitting in and making friends, espesially with someone who understands first hand what they're going thru. I think its very important for youths with albinism to get a chance to experience NOAh socail events also.
If anyone is interested in working with me to coordinate such an event in the midwest please let me know. I think it would be a blast.
Luke

Re: Adults With Albinism Events
Greetings, Rita: I'm 28, soon to be 29 January 1. I live in the Windy City...everyone knows where that's located lol...in terms of social events, there's always Milenium Park, the Chicago Cultural Center, Sears Tower, the John Hancock Center, Sailing, Restaurants, Clubs, Bars...Chicago never sleeps. Well, the Chicago Albinism Connection always meets once monthly. Driving? I know people who are able to drive in the City...Well, I'm going to learn in '07...FINALLY...I don't have any kids, but I certainly don't see the problem with adults bringing their children. Re: Adults With Albinism Events
Hi Midwesterners, Have you ever thought of having a mini conference? I did it here in Scranton, PA in 2003. It was some work but really not that difficult. We had 72 people in attendance. We had a Meet and Greet Friday evening, Saturday we had three conference sessions and then a local trip in the late afternoon and had three sessions on Sunday with another local trip Sunday afternoon. It was really a fantastic experience. I reserved thirty rooms at a local hotel for out of towners(we used all of them). I modeled it after NOAH conference. We had sessions on vision, education, visual services in PA, a skin care session, social issues session, and an experience panel. If you do have a mini conference NOAH will do the mailing for you. Lori is wonderfully helpful. Good luck in a future midwestern albinism event. I will tell you that whenever you can get the albinism community together there is a magic that occurs.

Re: Adults With Albinism Events
Hi Rita,
The events I have planned for PA are two fold: touring local places of interest and educational. Our latest event in Pittsburgh was educational and social (no tours because I am unfamiliar with the Pittsburgh area).
I plan NOAH-PA events this way for a reason. I traveled to Philadelphia on several occasions in the early eighties to attend NOAH events there. Their events were strictly educational. They would plan a day of sessions about different aspects of albinism. While they were informative, they lacked the opportunity to interact and really get to know the others attending the sessions. After attending three of the Philadelphia NOAH events I stopped going. Yet, I must keep in mind that NOAH was very young then and learning. Also, this was my entroduction to NOAH. My feeling today is that it is just as important if not more so for people with albinism to get to interact with each other in fun ways.
Personally, my top favorite NOAH event was the Adult Day in Chicago. I just loved Chicago and the trip that Saturday to the Navy Peer and the river tour. I roomed with Donna Inman and we just had more laughs than you could shake a stick at. I even enjoyed the bus being late to pick us up. The Mosaic window display at the Navy Peer was one of the most fascinating things I have seen.
I have also attended NOAH get togethers in Boston and DC. My trip to Boston was the first time I had really stayed in Boston. We had lunch in a local resteraunt where I got to meet the Boston folks and you. I remember the wonderful feeling I had when a large group of the people attending the lunch walked me back to my hotel through the Boston Commons; how neat is that to have a large group of people walk you back to your hotel. I also attended a lunch in DC. I remember sitting for hours in a lovely little resteraunt getting to know the folks from DC.
I must say, becoming active in NOAH has given me the best opportunity of my life to get to meet others with albinism. I have traveled to many different cities now, seen many things of interest, and created such wonderful memories. I feel this is the richest time of my life, Thank you NOAH for giving me this opportunity.
