    Television watching

My daughter used to have a head tilt which kept her to the side of the t.v.  She had her surgery and can look straight now and a little further back.  But she has grown to where she is right in the way.  We let her be but in another growth spurt or two it will not work at all.  We have tried different chairs but she doesnt like them and wants to stand.  We would love for her to sit on the couch with us and watch the movie with us.  I was wondering what everyone else does with the t.v. watching.  I was thinking maybe my husband can wire another t.v. up to set up by the couch so she will have her own monitor but how big of a screen should I get for her-what would be a safe size for her to see.(I know everyones vision varies but I have no reference point)   Any suggestion or shared experiences would be great!

    Hi Roxanne,

I'm and adult with OCA1a, my visual accuity is 20/200 corrected with glasses for farsightedness and astygmatism. I sit about 6ft from my 32 inch TV screen. I'd love to get a 50 or 60 inch plasma or LCD HD screen....but that's another story LOL.

Obviously, the bigger the screen, the further I can sit. I do find that when I'm at the department store comparing TVs, the quality of the resolution makes a difference too.

    I hope this helps

Morana, thank you so much, this really gives me a good base to go on!  Now to convince my hubby.  Wouldnt it be nice to get a visual impairment discount for a big plasma t.v.?

Pzts-Maybe a really tall bean bag!  Thanks

We are obviously going to have to change the set up to work for the whole family.

    Re: Television watching

My son, Zachary, has OCA and is 4 years old.

During the past year, I bought a TV stand and got rid of our entertainment center.  In the entertainment center, the TV sat about 6 inches higher than on the TV stand.  Before purchasing the TV stand, I actually put him in a little chair (rocker) and sat him in front of the TV and measured how high the TV stand should be.  Then I found the stand to fit him.  Sometimes, he actually lays on his little fold out couch and watches TV and does quite well.  However, either way, he is about 3-4 feet away--so he is pretty close.

We have a 27 in. TV and most likely will purchase a 40 in TV in the next year.  However, he does fine with the 27 in. TV--it is more my husband who wants the bigger TV.

I also switched around our living room (I had the cable guy reroute the cable line) so that the TV was not getting the glare and sun from the windows.  We have 7 windows just in our living room--5 being a big bay window.  It actually bothered me alot and I wanted to switch the living room so the Christmas tree could fit better.  It took alot of planning, but it worked out for everyone--including the Christmas tree.

By the way, the cable company didn't charge me anything to switch my cable line and he put in alot of time.  I called his boss to tell her what a great job he did and how he helped my son.

    Jo
