    Research on Albinism

         Hello everyone,

I am a freshman who lives Georgia. I am doing a research project for my biology class on Albinism. I still dont fully grasp all the "technical" issues and complications of having Albinism, but i would really like to know the mental effects it has on people. Does it effect your everyday life a lot? If so how? what are some problems that you run into during the day that most other people would not need to take the same precautions? Also i have read that people can have parents with colored hair and skin and they can be born with Albinism. So does this make Albinism a recessive allel or does it make it a genetic mutation. It's kind of a obvious question, but i can't seem to understand the answers i read off info pages. So if some one could put that into a high-schoolers perspective i would greatly aprieciate it....thanks a lot for everything hope you all are well.

Does it effect your everyday life a lot? If so how? Yes, in school I'm "different", w/ my vision I can't read everything so I use a magnifier for books, I get a copy of my notes we take in class && I use a monocular 2 see my assignments on the bored, i also use a program on my computer called zoomtext 2 get the text bigger

what are some problems that you run into during the day that most other people would not need to take the same precautions? hmm.... well if im outside I HAVE to have sunblock on if its sunny && im going 2 be out there for a while, I need my sunglasses b/c the light hurts my eyes, I should wear a hat b/c my scalp gets burned easy

albinism IS a genetic condition, bother parents must carry the gene in order for a person 2 be born w/ it, my parents don't have the condition, my mom's cousin does though..

    Re: Research on Albinism

    Hi I am also a high-school freshman.

Yes, it really affects everyday life. I have to hold things closer to my eyes than other people. Usually I can't recognize someone, even family, until they are close by.

One example is if someone wants to show me something on their computer, I have to lean in a few more inches than they do to be able to read it.

Everyday precautions? Well, outside I wear a hat, sunglasses, and if out for a long time, sunscreen. We have to reapply about double or triple as much as everyone else.

It is hard when you have to sit in the first few rows when everyone else might want to sit in the back.

I also can't sit directly under a light, or have a light right in front of me because ti hurts my eyes.

Both parents have to carry the gene for a child to have albinism. The parents don;t have to have albinism for their child to. There's a one-in-four chance that their chilld will have albinism. Any animal or person can get albinism, including all ethnic groups.

Be sure to post your report so we can read it!!

I trip up the stairs. 0_o
