Ok, I recently talked to a friend of mine who attended a summer camp for visually impaired teens, and she has a mobility trainer and a few other things. I'm just curious as to how I find these things in a state like Mississippi. There seems to be nothing here but the Mississippi School for the Blind. I've been there for a summer camp (when I was about 8. I'm 17 now), but what I'm really looking for is affordable things. I think it would be a great help to get a mobility instructor. I heard they teach you all sorts of things... It sounds like it really would be such a great help, and I'm extremely interested.

Anyone know any good websites? Or live in MS? Anything?

My son attended a camp through the local lions club in Michigan. Check with them. It was free of charge and they also hire visually impaired people to be camp councellors.Good Luck

I have never attended any of the camps for the visually impaired nor with O and M training; however, you might consider getting into contact with the state's vocational rehab program. They usually don't step in until after high school graduation,but they might be able to offer some suggestions or contacts. They can also aid in any financial difficulties you might encounter.If not, check with you VI teacher. If you can't find anything,ler me know and I might can find you something over here next door in AL. Hope this was of some help.

Leader Dogs for the Blind is a great facility in MIchigan...it may be the one mentioned in a previous reply as it is sponsored by the Lions Club. I was there in June getting a dog guide, but while I was, there was also an O&M camp being held for teens as well as individual O&M training and GPS Trekker training too.

It's a wonderful facility, first class. The instructors are incredible and the grounds, rooms and meals are top notch. It's all paid for by the International Lions Club. Their website is www.leaderdog.org.
