Newbie to this section! Few questions for expierenced people please? (=

Alright well I'm 14 and living in North Dakota. I REALLY wanna be able to drive but I do know that it might not happen. My vision is around 20/150 corrected. My question is - do you think I'll be able to drive with the use of bioptics? My mom said she's going to call my vision teacher and talk to her about it. I don't want to get my hopes up but come on - what teenager DOESN'T wanna drive? I mean I know I probably won't be able to drive at night and stuff. I do live in a fairly small town.... I mean it isn't tiny but it isn't the biggest.

Do yall think it would be possible? Any advice or opinions would be nice!

    Thanks (=

    God bless

I don't know a whole lot about driving with bioptics,, but if your visions 20/150 corrected, I don't see why you shouldn't be able to use them. You're very blessed that your vision is that good. =) Mines around 20/400 corrected. Haha. I'm blind. How terrible huh? LOL.

    God Bless.

Hahaa yeahhh. I was 20/400 and it couldn't be corrected. Then I had surgery and it was like AMAZING! Now I'm 20/400 without correction still but I'm 20/150 with (=

    Megan,

My name is Stewart.  I know how it feel's to want to be able to drive the one thing I want to put first and foremost is be patient you might not be able to get it at 16 like everyone else.  I live in Kentucky and have just now recieved my Driver's License. I just turned 21 in April.  and I got my License on Monday 2009-07-13.  It is a long process but once you have achieved it it is a wonderful feeling.  The best place to start is your state's Office or Department for the Blind.  they will be able to get you on the right track. They will also cover the cost of the Bi-optic Glasses which cost anywhere from $1200 to $1500 by themselves. The training that is required and the Dr's visits that are requried.  Heck my OFB even payed for my friends to take me to my low vision specalist which is 300+ miles round trip.  it usually involves being put on a waiting list but you will get through it.  I started my process when i was about 16-17 and as I said I just recieved my license a couple months after my 21st Birthday.  and the training usually consist of going out and driving with a Bioptic Instructor.  in KY you have to have 30 hours of training.  I did mine in about a week and a half driving 5 hours a day and passed my road test on the first try.  and before my training I didn't think that once i got my license that i would ever use the bi-optic device.  but after the training even though they look completely retarded I wear them because they do really help.  also there is one upside to doing the Bi-optic Driving Program.  (It qualifies you for a discount on your insurance because the training qualifies as a state sponsered drivers education course).  Again i cannot stress this enough.  BE PATIENT and it will work out.  I should have put this in earlier but my vision is 2/150 corrected.  if you want to know more E-mail me and I will get back with you asap.  Hope I have helped answer your questions.

     Helms, Thomas S.
